Rodri was Manchester City’s real hero against Tottenham

About Football Express UK

Pep Guardiola‘s team had a difficult first half that ended with the north London team taking advantage. It was an error by Ederson to score first. Dejan Kulusevski of Tottenham was the scorer after Rodri failed to intercept the City goalkeeper’s sloppy pass.

After another dull first half, City supporters booed their team. Tottenham scored their second goal after Emerson Royal headed in the ball in the back of City’s net.

The Citizens, on the other hand, came out firing in the second half. They have tied after only 53 minutes thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland. Both benefitted from superb work from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian kept harassing the Spurs back line and handed City a well-deserved lead. His shot beat Hugo Lloris at his near post. The winger then completed an outstanding three points by chipping the Frenchman in the dying moments.

Despite the fact that Mahrez will garner most of the attention, Rodri put on yet another outstanding performance in the middle of the field.

Rodri and his superb display against Tottenham

According to Sofascore, the “world-class” Spaniard received a superb 7.4/10 rating for his play. He was the highest of everyone on the field outside Mahrez (9.4) and Kulusevski (7.8).

The former Atletico Madrid player had 119 touches of the ball during the entire 90 minutes. Far and away the most of any player on the field.

The 26-year-old, who is best renowned for his defensive skills, made three critical passes, two shots, and eight successful long balls during the game—all of which were higher than his season averages of 1.2 key passes, 1.5 shots, and 5.6 long balls per game.

He would, however, also perform admirably at the back, making three tackles over the course of the game, which was again an improvement over his average of 2.2 per match in the Premier League so far this season.

World-class performances from the midfield have become Rodri’s routine, but on Thursday night, he really stepped up in Kevin De Bruyne’s absence, highlighting his skill with the ball as he excelled in possession.

As a result, while Mahrez will receive praise for his goal-related efforts in the second half, Rodri also deserves praise for another excellent performance for Guardiola.
