Manchester United’s first goal against Manchester City was Slammed Offside by Ally McCoist

Erik ten Hag

On Saturday, Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the local derby, although the Reds’ opening goal had to be overturned by video assistant referees (VAR) after it was initially disallowed. According to Ally McCoist, the weekend goal by Bruno Fernandes for Manchester United against Manchester City makes “an absolute mockery of the game.”

Furthermore, Pep Guardiola’s team was defeated by Erik ten Hag’s team as they rallied from a goal behind to win. Jack Grealish had given the home team the lead in the 60th minute. However, the Reds came back strongly and tied the game in the 78th minute through Bruno Fernandes. VAR awarded the goal.

Marcus Rashford received an attractive feed from Casemiro, but the England international was positioned offside. He made the decision to leave the pass, which allowed Fernandes to run onto it and score past Ederson in the City goal. The linesman instantly raised his flag after declaring the Portuguese star’s goal to have been offside.

VAR, however, After swiftly reviewing the goal, Michael Oliver determined that Rashford had not interfered with play sufficiently to cause it to be nullified and allowed the goal to stand.

Ally McCoist Furious on Var’s Decision In Manchester Derby

Since then, there have been numerous further complaints, and Richard Keys is one of those who is upset about the call. In a fiery outburst on talkSPORT, former Scotland striker Ally McCoist has now added his voice to the chorus of condemnation.

“It’s a ridiculous decision. The goal should not stand,”

he said.

“To say that he’s not interfering with play is a ridiculous statement. He’s made the run through, he’s standing right next to the goalscorer. If that’s not affecting the defenders and the goalkeeper then I don’t know what is.”

“It’s as bad as the Mo Salah one, whenever that was. It’s as bad as that. They’re making an absolute mockery of the game. They really are – it’s shocking.”

Ally McCoist was referencing Salah’s goal during Liverpool and Wolves’ 2-2 FA Cup draw on January 7. When the ball was played, the Egyptian was offside. But Wolves defender Toti Gomes touch signaled the start of a new phase of play, which allowed him to score.
