The Pro League club Genk is expected to seek about €32 million (£28 million) for El Khannouss services this winter as they look to make the teenager their record sale. According to reports from Belgium, City and Napoli are presently in the lead in the hunt to sign the player.
The attacking midfielder, who is only 18 years old, has played in all but one of Genk’s games in the Belgian top division thus far this season. He has made two assists in 18 games and received a strong 6.68 rating from WhoScored for his efforts. De Smurfen are currently comfortably in first place in the Pro League.
Last season, the club’s technical director Dimitri De Condé spoke highly of El Khannouss’ talent and potential.
“Bilal is a pleasure to watch and during my eight years at the club, I have rarely seen such a talent at KRC Genk.”

El Khannouss Bright Future
This certainly bodes well for the youngster’s future in the game. City will undoubtedly be hoping that he can live up to his potential should he move to the Etihad. Players like Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois have all come through Genk’s academy and gone on to big things.
Palmer has struggled in his sparse appearances so far this season. He failed to register a single goal or assist in any of his 16 appearances across all competitions. The arrival of another highly regarded attacking midfielder might very well mean Palmer’s demise.
When Guardiola elevated the 20-year-old to the first squad, it appeared that he may follow in the footsteps of Phil Foden. Especially given his incredible U21s record, which has seen him achieve 22 goals and 11 assists in just 29 appearances.
He has had two opportunities to shine under Guardiola. But, he failed to make an impression against Chelsea and Southampton. It would be surprising to see him handed many more chances this year.
Therefore, it may be the end for one of City’s academy products if the 18-year-old El Khannouss does sign with the club.
