Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will hold talks with Erik ten Hag over retaining the captaincy.
The English star endured a dismal campaign this season with much of his goof-ups frustrating the fans and players within the club. Some players in the dressing room even complained about him not living to the level of what the club stands for.
The campaign this season was the worst for the Red Devils finishing sixth in the Premier League and missing out on Champions League football. Much of the damage was caused due to the defence leaking a lot of goals this season. Maguire has been unable to instill any confidence in the fans or even the players of his club.
Maguire to be Stripped Off Captaincy?
While many within the squad want a change in the captaincy, Maguire still wants to retain the armband for the forthcoming season.
The new manager, Erik ten Hag has called him a great player in his first interview with the Mancunian side but is open to putting the captaincy to a dressing room vote. He said-
“I have to repeat next season is a different season. I think he did a great job, he is a great player.”
Fans of the club believe that the player has failed to show a strong character on the pitch let alone his poor performances. Moreover, with many of his poor outings with the club, Ten Hag may find a quick solution by stripping him of his role as the captain.
The likes of Bruno Fernandes, David de Gea, and Raphael Varane are options to claim the armband from the English international. Cristiano Ronaldo too has projected leadership qualities with Portugal and can very well lead a squad like Manchester United.
However, the current skipper wants to hold talks with the gaffer over the captaincy role before the next season gets underway. It remains to be seen what transpires and if Maguire remains the skipper of the club for the 22/23 season.
