Manchester City compelled to buy a natural left-back before the 2022–23 season. The suspension of Benjamin Mendy and the sale of Oleksandr Zinchenko tensed the Citizens. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Marc Cucurella was a target for Pep Guardiola and City. But City refused to match his £50 million asking price.
The 24-year-old eventually signed with Chelsea over the summer. He has battled at Stamford Bridge, and Pep Guardiola could feel he got off easy. Cucurella struggled mightily during City’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea and was at fault for the goal.

Riyad Mahrez beat the Spanish international, to a cross before converting from close range. Cucurella was taken on several occasions as well, so Guardiola inability to get his signature may have been for the best.
In the Chelsea squad, Cucurella ranks 13th for interceptions (0.6 per game). He ranks 13th for opportunities created (0.4 per game). He ranks second in dribbled past(14). (0.3 per game). Cucurella is a good cross-blocking player but needs improvement in other aspects of defending.
Nevertheless, Chelsea regrets their purchase of Cucurella for £60 million more than City and Pep Guardiola regrets missing out on the opportunity to get him.
