Manchester United have dropped their interest in PSG midfielder Leandro Paredes. United had earlier shown interest in signing Paredes as they made an inquiry with the PSG board. However United drop out of the race as PSG have kept a price tag along the range of 35M.
Manchester United have struggled this season as they lose out on Champions League football. United finished sixth with 58 points and a goal difference of zero. This was officially United’s worst year ever since Alex Ferguson left the club. Although United’s journey had a decent beginning as they won against Leeds 5-1 on opening day. Consecutive wins along the way and finding an agreement with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane was promising. Moreover United went on to add Cristiano Ronaldo into the mix and the Red Devils looked like genuine title contenders.
However, everything went downhill after the initial honeymoon period. The squad started playing poor football as they were unable to even do the basics. Moreover, the squad struggled with injury as most of the time United were without their main players.
Most of these happened as United shifted tactics to a more possession-based play style. The United squad were a counter-attacking squad. However, the addition of Sancho and Ronaldo meant they had to switch tactics to accommodate the players. This meant that the players had to adjust to a new style that they had no previous knowledge of and struggled to find form.
Lack of a defensive midfielder
Although the major issue United had was the lack of a decent defensive midfielder. Matic was aging and losing his legs and could only play the odd week. United had to try Fred and Scott McTominay in a double pivot which backfired.
United desperately need a new defensive midfielder although they have dropped their interest in Paredes. This is mostly due to his injury troubles in the recently concluded season as he missed around 20 competitive games for the Parisians. United do not wish to invest in a player who might not able to return their investment back.
