Transfers: Liverpool signs Darwin Nunez

About Football Express UK

Liverpool have announced the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Nunez arrives with a contract that lasts for six years. Liverpool breaks their transfer record as this is their biggest signing. The deal was finalized over 75m which would go up to 100m in add-ons later.

Liverpool have wanted a new forward for some time as their original trio is aging. Moreover, Sadio Mane had confirmed to depart the club in the Summer. Mane was Klopp’s first signing, leaving a big legacy after winning every trophy possible with Liverpool. Mane played a central role this season compared to the role he played last season on the flanks. The Senegalese forward was crucial for the Kloppites as they finished second in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Roberto Firmino is slowly turning into a second-choice striker as he is aging. Moreover, Liverpool have found probably the best January signing in the form of Luis Diaz. Diaz has been very crucial for Liverpool as he came in clutch for them at several moments. Diego Jota on the other hand is a second-choice striker and often starts in “smaller” games.

Why Nunez?

Liverpool have wanted a forward to replace at least one of the trio and as Mane leaves, The Reds have signed Darwin Nunez. Nunez has been brilliant for Benfica this season and several clubs were circling around him like vultures. The Uruguayan has found the back of the net 34 times and has assisted 4 times in 41 matches in all competitions.

Earlier Manchester United had shown interest in Nunez as they looked to find someone to support Cristiano Ronaldo. However United does not play in the Champions League in the coming season whereas Liverpool does. This essentially made Nunez choose Liverpool.
