Manchester United have drawn a list of transfer targets for the upcoming season. United are in desperate need of center-backs for the season. They have targeted Antony and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. However, they intend to go after either one of them as they need to improve other aspects of the squad as well.
Manchester United have had a poor run in the recently concluded season. United have had their worst finish in years as they end the season with 58 points. Moreover United had a zero-goal difference in the league which meant they conceded as much as they scored. United were on course to concede more however David De Gea was back to his best in the season. Without De Gea’s efforts, United could have finished lower in the league.
Defensive Struggle
United’s defensive struggles were due to a number of reasons. One, The United defense had an injury-prone season. Raphael Varane came into the team to expand the defence. However, the Frenchman suffered injury-related throughout the season. Moreover, other center backs – Victor Lindelof, and Eric Bailly had injury problems as well. Secondly, No center back pair was tested long enough to be the first choice. Most importantly, United were a team in transition as they switched from a counter-attacking play style to a possession-based play style. This essentially put players out of position as they weren’t accustomed to playing in a possession-based environment.
United under Ten Hag will employ quick passing football which is another form of possession football. Ten Hag wants players that fit his vision as he intends to employ a high line. The United defense is slow and Ten Hag wants his previous players – Antony or Martinez. Although United will have to choose between the two.
