Manchester United needs to pay up Maguire before he departs

Manchester United

Football Insider’s sources revealed that Harry Maguire is seeking his £10 million-a-year Manchester United contract. That is to be settled before he departs this summer. Following discussions with Erik ten Hag, the 30-year-old center-back has been absent from his position as the captain of Manchester United. Thus, he is now facing the prospect of being in a second-string status if he remains with the club.

Manchester United is willing to offload Maguire at a reduced price of approximately £35 million. Thus, several Premier League clubs showed interest in acquiring him.

Manchester United to receive a bid for Harry Maguire

West Ham is among the interested parties eager to strike a deal. But the main obstacle for them and other potential suitors is the England international’s hefty weekly salary of £190,000. The Irons are not ready to match or come close to that contract to facilitate a deal. Consequently, Maguire, who still has two years remaining on his Manchester United contract, would need to accept a substantial pay reduction if he decides to depart.

According to sources, the defender is looking for a payoff from Manchester United. That is to facilitate his departure. Alternatively, he might be willing to wait out his contract and bide his time for an opportunity under Ten Hag.

During the 2022-23 season, he featured in 31 matches across all competitions but only started in 16 of those games.

Meanwhile, Maguire resumed pre-season training. But he was not in the squad that secured a 2-0 victory against Leeds last week. This was because he was granted additional time off due to his international commitments.
