Manchester City ‘tracking’ a World Cup player to replace a 27-year-old

Chelsea Transfer Guardiola

Rodri has been Manchester City first-choice midfielder. Kalvin Phillips has had a challenging first season and Pep Guardiola hasn’t given him many opportunities. So his long-term future may be in doubt.

According to Javier Parra Pea of Fichajes, Guardiola may already be considering replacing Phillips with Enzo Fernandez. Phillips is “not performing”. Manchester City are apparently “tracking” the World Cup winner, although it is unclear whether they will actually make a move.

Last summer, Fernandez signed a five-year contract to join Benfica. Since then, he has made 28 appearances across all competitions, contributing four goals and seven assists.

It’s no secret that the region of the field has required improvement for a while, especially with the incumbents Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek sometimes battling with their fitness, form, or both.

Enzo Fernandes and his ratings compared to Manchester City Players

The Argentine is a fantastic midfielder, leading City players in tackles (2.4) and interceptions (just two) in the Premier League this season, but City won’t sign him unless a current player leaves.

Chelsea wants to sign the midfielder. The Blues have a better chance of signing him than Manchester City. Although Phillips’ time in Manchester hasn’t been great, Guardiola is unlikely to fire him after just one season.

Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Declan Rice appear to be Chelsea’s top three choices, albeit given the amount of money their new owners have available, it might not even be an either/or situation.

Fernandez may be an improvement, especially to recover the £44.1 million spent for City.
