Man City set to reveal another statue at Etihad to honor legendary trio

Manchester City

The treble winners have announced that they will be unveiling fourth statue of a player outside their stadium. Man City have already installed statues of club legends Serio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and David Silva. However, the Manchester side wants to honor their legends from past eras. Earlier, the Chairman of Man City football club, Khaldoon Al Mubarak said in 2022,

“I think remembering Colin Bell, Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee is very important. This Club has a great history. These are players that have contributed immensely to this Club. They’ve earned the right to be appreciated forever, eternally with statues.”

Now City have announced in an official statement that world famous sculptor David Williams-Ellis is the artist working on the statue. It is a permanent tribute to legendary trio Colin Bell, Francis Lee, and Mike Summerbee. The official statement stated,

“Williams-Ellis’s work on this commission has focused on capturing the motion and characteristics of each player and embodying the spirit of their combined 30 years representing Manchester City.”

The west side of the Etihad stadium will host their statues. Moreover, Man City will reportedly unveil the statue in the Champions League game against RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

Reactions after Man City announce the unveiling of statue

David Williams-Ellis reacted to the announcement on Man City’s official website, he said,

“It is a great honour to create a work of art for Manchester City Football Club celebrating the diverse, talented players, Bell, Lee and Summerbee. It’s been an extraordinary last two years, working on this project that celebrates these players from a great era in Manchester City’s football history. I hope that the work will give a sense of history and place to the legions of fans and visitors that come to the football ground from around the world and become an enduring part of Manchester’s cultural landscape.”

The website described the statue of trio of Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee as tribute to legendary triumvirate. The trio altogether had an experience of 30 years playing for the club in the 60s and 70s.
