Liverpool centre-back sheds light on contract extension despite reduced game-time

Klopp

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez explained his stance on his extension with the club despite having reduced game-time.

Upon his arrival in 2015 from Charlton Athletic, Gomez has eased into a regular in the first team setup. However, in recent times the defender seems to have lost his spark as he created once during his initial years.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has even picked Ibrahima Konate over Gomez on many occasions last season in the regular squad. Clearly, the defender has slipped down the pecking order at Anfield and hopes to somehow reclaim his spot as regular.

Gomez explains decision behind Liverpool extension

With the lack of game-time under Klopp, the defender was under much speculation regarding a potential move away from Liverpool. Moreover, Aston Villa were interested in the Liverpool marksman to make his signing this summer.

However, despite the fact that Gomez has had less game-time, he has decided to extend his contract. In an interview with Liverpool ECHO, he explained the decision behind his extension with the club.

He said-

“I can understand why people would have thought I’d be considering moving on, for sure, 100%.

It’s apparent from my age now and based on my opportunities in the past, there was definitely still a decision for me to make.

“I guess you could see it at as a crossroads. But speaking to the club, I knew it was an important decision for me to make. Fundamentally, the opportunity that I have here and the platform and the chance to be at this club is one that is hard to walk away from.

Essentially, it was me accepting the fact I have got to take on the challenge,”

The defender has extended his contract till 2027 and he will hope to turn things around for good.
