Rio Ferdinand warns Barcelona captain against joining Man United

Rio Ferdinand

Barcelona Captain Ronald Araujo has been a crucial key to the Barca squad for a few years now. Araujo is the solid center back holding together the whole defensive lineup of Barcelona. The Uruguayan signed a new contract with the Catalan club in 2022. But before his commitment to Barca, he was approached by Man United for a transfer in 2022. And Man United are reportedly still interested in the Uruguayan to reinforce their defense. After continued good performances, Araujo has attracted interest from Bayern Munich as well as long term admiration from Man United. Araujo has established himself as one of the best Center backs in the world, from a young prodigy. In a podcast Rio Ferdinand was talking about the players United had brought in, and their progress in the club.

Rio says Araujo would be “risking his career” if he joins United

Rio Ferdinand was critical of United boss Erik Ten Hag and his impact on the new players. Giving the example of Raphael Varane and Casemiro, two world class players who worsened since their transfer to United. Rio said that for Araujo, joining Man United in this point of career, would be risking his career. He said on FIVE,

“If I am a player like Ronald, who I think has all the attributes to be one of the best defenders in the world, why would I go to United? I would be looking at Varane and thinking that if I go to Manchester United, I could end up on the bench for a left-back or for an old veteran like Jonny Evans, a former player who has returned to his last years. And someone who used to be captain and who was out for 18 months, but who is now back fit like Maguire. I can’t go there and risk my life and my career.”
