The fact that Man City would fight UEFA was not at all unexpected. UEFA’s decision to (try to) expel the Blues from the Champions League came after years of disagreements; City fans boo the Champions League anthem for years. Before the serious charges levelled at the club, and with good reason. Both organisations were undoubtedly determined in 2020 to protect their reputations. Even while the tension in 2020 made things worse, there had never been a good foundation for ties between the two large monsters.
Although Man City are being accused of the same things by the Premier League, their interactions have been completely different. They have won six league championships while being owned by Sheikh Mansour. The Blues have been one of the league’s biggest selling points as they have developed to have significantly more financial clout than any other European league.
There have undoubtedly been hiccups along the way. There were some complaints from there about a Christmas schedule that seemed to give their championship rivals a helping hand after Richard Scudamore said that the Premier League wouldn’t want a repetition of City’s 100-point season.
Man City on the precipice of collapse
On the other hand, the league was undoubtedly furious with City’s participation in the separatist European Super League. Which would have ripped the Premier League’s heart (and its selling point) out. The fact that City was the last to join and the first to leave it helped their cause. Pep Guardiola was the first well-known manager to publicly oppose the plans. But it was obvious that other clubs in the league were enacting change much more quickly than Man City was, as had been the case with the disastrous Project Big Picture.
The Premier League and City enjoy a successful working relationship. Both supporting the other in achieving the impressive rise they have each experienced over the past ten years. Each person has risen higher by using the other.
Fatal charges on City
The truth is that the way the Premier League broke the bad news to Man City on Monday wounded everyone at the Etihad. Because it was a cheap move that ignored the importance of their bond. It’s possible that Ferran Soriano won’t be attending the Premier League dinner on Thursday night. It’s unclear how the discoveries this week will affect the collaboration that the two sides were previously engaged in.
By the end, the claims will rip at least one of them apart completely, but what happens in the interim? With everything going on behind the scenes, can they still coexist peacefully?
This will not go away quickly like the Super League or in a few months like UEFA’s proposed sanction. More repercussions than anyone anticipated could result from the Premier League going to battle with City.
