Manchester City are eyeing to sign Colwill

Manchester City Colwill

Journalist Simon Phillips claims that due to the young defender’s strong displays while on loan at Brighton, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich are casting admiring glances in Colwill direction.

Colwill joined Huddersfield Town on loan in the Championship last year, and he quickly became popular with the Terriers. He played 31 times for the Yorkshire team and helped them get to the playoff final. He earned a remarkable 6.97 average rating from WhoScored.

The 19-year-old joined Brighton last summer, and after a sluggish beginning, he has been a regular under Roberto de Zerbi. He earned a good 7.28 rating in the Seagulls’ most recent 3-0 victory over Liverpool.

For his contributions to Huddersfield’s team last season, the England U21 international received high acclaim from Carlos Corberan. He is confident that Colwill will reach the pinnacle of the game.

He said:

“He’s a very young player with a lot of things he is doing fantastically, and other things he needs to continue improving.”

“I think he’s going to be one of the most important centre-backs for this country in the future.”

Should Colwill join Manchester City?

This is incredibly high praise for such a young player, but given that he is now starting at centre back for one of the Premier League’s best teams, it is difficult to imagine how Colwill won’t be making an appearance for the Three Lions soon. In fact, reports suggest that he is already close to receiving his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Given his skill on the ball, Colwill is very much a modern centre defender in the vein of John Stones. He excels at passing, aerial duels, and setting up opportunities for teammates.

Colwill could easily follow in the footsteps of Stones, who made his name in the lower levels with Barnsley before moving on to Everton and then Manchester City, should he decide to join the Etihad this season.

Although it will be challenging to convince the teenager to leave Stamford Bridge. Colwill might feel that moving away would be best for his career. Chelsea’s lack of opportunities for young players. And also the money that has been spent on centre-backs like Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, and Benoit Badiashile over the past year.

If City does decide to take a chance on another young English center-back, there is currently little evidence to suggest that he won’t eventually develop into a top Premier League defender like Stones.
