Jamie Carragher gives important advise to Liverpool

March Brighton Liverpool

To have an excellent campaign, Liverpool needs to add a defender and another midfielder this summer. That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit and club legend Jamie Carragher, who expressed it following his team’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle United. Despite the Reds last-minute victory at St. James’ Park, Carragher admitted to have doubts about the strength and depth of his team.

Jamie Carragher wants Liverpool to regain their ‘old potential’

Liverpool have been City’s main competitors in previous years, but Jurgen Klopp’s team’s decline in performance last season resulted in a dismal fifth place finish. As a result, Liverpool will play in the Europa League this year for the first time since the 2015–16 campaign. In order to compete in the title race, the Reds must complete two significant additions before the transfer market closes on Friday.

Carragher says : “Liverpool have been Manchester City’s biggest rivals for the last four or five years. Arsenal came to the fore last season. But why can’t Liverpool be that team again this season?”

“The squad that Liverpool have right now isn’t good enough to challenge Manchester City, but they’ve got to go for it in the transfer market this week in terms of bringing in another defender and midfielder. That has to happen because Liverpool can still be the biggest rivals to Manchester City.”

“They’ve made a decent start to the season, but when you’ve got someone like Alisson – a world-class goalkeeper, maybe the best goalkeeper in the world – Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah, these are players who are not coming to the end of their careers but are at that stage where if Liverpool are going to go on to do something big again, it has to happen in the next year or two.”

“So really go for it in the last week of the transfer window to get a squad that is good enough to challenge Manchester City.”

Reds have already begun planning their last-minute acquisitions

This summer, Klopp made three midfield transfers in an effort to boost his team. Dominik Szoboszlai, who has already illustrated his class, appears to be the best among those additions. The Reds will now be hoping that fellow newcomers Alexis Mac Allister and Waturu Endo will surely prove their class as well. Liverpool, meanwhile, is still looking to bolster their midfield before the transfer market closes. There are still linked to Ryan Gravenberch, Cheick Doucoure, and most notably, Kouadio Kone. Goncalo Inacio of Sporting Lisbon is reportedly a centre back Liverpool is considering. Perr Schurrs of Torino is another long-term option.
