Ian Wright claims Mikel Arteta doesn’t trust €75m midfielder yet

Mikel Arteta

Kai Havertz has not been the player he was expected to be since his arrival in Arsenal. He has had a difficult start to the season in the North London club. He was signed in the summer transfer window just before the start of the season for €70m from rivals Chelsea. Despite finding it difficult to adjust in his new team, Havertz has picked up form recently. With back to back goals in consecutive fixtures, things were looking good for the German. He was expected to start against Wolves in the match on Saturday, but Mikel Arteta started Leandro Trossard instead. Ian Wright expressed that this might be due to lack of trust from Arteta for the midfielder.

Ian Wright gave his opinion on the situation

While talking to Premier League Productions, Ian Wright said that Arteta might not trust Havertz completely. He said this might be the case because Trossard provides ‘more control’ and Kai Havertz just ‘isn’t at the level yet’ for that. He said,

“Arteta knows he has got that up his sleeve, especially with Havertz now he has got confidence by scoring in his last couple of games, I think Trossard gives him a little bit more control. In a game where we are going to need to control – he gives us that little bit more stability and Kai maybe isn’t at that level yet, in respect to the trust Mikel will have in him, at the moment.”

Kai Havertz and Arsenal

While Havertz did get his minutes after coming from the bench versus Wolves. It is interesting to see Mikel Arteta giving him chance from the bench rather than starting him in games. ian Wright may have been right in his assumption. However, Arteta did start him in Saturday’s game against Aston Villa. With a late disallowed goal by Havertz, he might have changed Arteta’s mind with his performance. Arsenal are second in the league now with a game in hand comparing with the leaders Liverpool.
