The success Liverpool has had over the last few years can be traced to German manager Jurgen Klopp. The Merseyside giants have been one of the top clubs in the world for the last few years. They were consistently one of the Top 2 teams in the Premier League. They have also regularly contended for the Champions League, reaching the Finals thrice in the past five years.
The current Liverpool side could have been in contention with one of the strongest sides of all time. Only the dominance of Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premiership blocked them. A notable point in their favor would be the strict budgets and minimal spending around which Jurgen Klopp has built a world-class team.
And Manchester United legend, Gary Neville pointed out how Klopp has been punching well above his weight for a long time at Anfield.
“Jurgen Klopp has just been punching above his weight for so long when you look at the net spend of all the other teams, and what he’s achieved has just been off the scale to be competing with that [Manchester] City team.”
The many woes and problems faced by Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp’s clever scouting and recruitment may have downsides. There are signs that their recent success is unsustainable.
The Reds have struggled to produce resale value for their players. Many key players including Salah, Van Dijk, and Alisson have reached their 30s, and receiving revenue from a Coutinho-Esque sale is likely going to be impossible.
After a 3-2 loss to Arsenal and a 7-1 triumph over a weak Rangers, Liverpool faces their biggest challenge yet. Manchester City will be visiting Anfield on Sunday, very much eager to crush Klopp’s injury-ridden team.
