Chelsea made a mistake with the 23-year-old, says Danny Murphy

About Football Express UK

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy thinks Chelsea made a mistake as they haven’t included a buy-back clause when they sold Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace. Marc Guehi left Stamford Bridge for Selhurst Park back in 2021. However, since then, he has developed into a very good centre midfielder.

As a result, the 23-year-old is now a full England international. Murphy, speaking on talkSPORT, told that he is one that got away for Chelsea.

Guehi has started for the Three Lions’ in their last two consecutive matches. However, he thus showed how far he has come since leaving Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea made a mistake:

Discussing Guehi’s exit from Chelsea, Murphy said:

“I think it’s always difficult when players are on a certain journey that doesn’t align with the club. And what I mean by that is he wanted to play every week; he was probably at Chelsea at a time where players ahead of him were rightly ahead of him.

“And although you might see this potential and this emerging talent for a year or two two years down the line, if he’s completely unsettled and there’s a value to get him gone and take the money for him and let him go, you… I mean, they should’ve put a buy-back clause in of a reasonable amount maybe.

Should Chelsea re-sign Guehi?

Undoubtedly, Guehi is currently one of the top centre-backs in the Premier League at this moment in the recent times.

“He has all the attributes you need to be a centre-back,” his England team-mate Harry Maguire was recently quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

However, as good as Guehi is, Chelsea probably do not need him.

They have options in defence, with Mauricio Pochettino able to call upon Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill at present. And when Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah return from their injuries, they can also be added to the list.

If Fofana picked up another injury after his comeback, then maybe it would be a bit of a different story. But for now, we do not think the Blues really need to be prioritising another central defender. However, they would be surprised to see Guehi re-signed.
