Chelsea are on the verge of snapping up the services of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the transfer window this summer.
The Blues are holding talks with the player’s environment and are close to reaching an agreement with de Jong. Thomas Tuchel is very keen to add de Jong to his squad and believes he could provide a lot at Stamford Bridge.
Moreover, it is no secret that Barcelona are going through a financial crisis that has forced them to sell players. One among the list of players departing is Frenkie De Jong who is now linked to a move to Chelsea.
De Jong to join Chelsea?
Frenkie de Jong was initially linked to another Premier League side during the initial days of the transfer window. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was pushing for his move to land him at the Theatre of Dreams.
However, the midfielder was clear that he wouldn’t like to join United as the club doesn’t provide Champions League football. In addition to that, Barcelona have also attempted to keep him with the President expressing his desire to keep him.
That said, the Blaugrana outfit have realized that it could be difficult to block a move for the player. The club’s dire financial status has forced them to put the player on sale in the window this summer.
Now, Tuchel has received the green light from new owner Todd Boehly to sign de Jong in the window. Chelsea are open to splashing a fee in the region of £80m for the Dutch international for the move.
De Jong joining Chelsea could see him get regular minutes under Tuchel due to the reputation he has maintained. Whereas, at Barcelona, he could be seen spending time on the bench this season if he is to stay.
Chelsea could facilitate a move very soon as the two clubs are discussing the move for de Jong.
