Szoboszlai of Liverpool to play in defensive midfield next season

Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai hinted at the possibility of being in a defensive midfield role. As the Reds face the prospect of losing Fabinho to Al Ittihad, they are actively searching for a new holding midfielder. With no natural replacement available in the squad, various names came forward as potential options.

However, according to Szoboszlai, there might be an unexpected solution. As quoted in The Daily Mail, the 22-year-old stated that playing in the No.6 role is “no problem” for him. Although he admitted that he would prefer not to.

Indeed, playing as a deep-lying midfielder for Liverpool requires a different approach compared to other teams. There is a significant emphasis on the player in that role to anchor the team while others push forward around them. It necessitates a specialist who can fulfill the unique demands of the position effectively.

Liverpool desperate in finding Fabinho replacement

Fabinho’s performance in that role at Anfield was indeed remarkable for four out of five years. He was the ideal player for that position, and there was no one else the team would have preferred. When searching for players with similar characteristics, Szoboszlai does not immediately come to mind as a natural fit for that specific role.

Indeed, Szoboszlai’s willingness to consider playing in the defensive midfield role might indicate a strategic approach of Liverpool in shaping his new midfield recruits. It’s possible that Klopp is exploring different options and player adaptability to enhance the team’s midfield dynamics. Klopp could be aiming to create a more versatile and adaptable midfield unit to suit the team’s needs.

Instead of solely focusing on bringing in players for specific defined positions, Liverpool may be prioritizing versatility in his midfield recruits. Alexis Mac Allister, being a multi-faceted midfielder with experience in playing in deeper roles, fits into this narrative. Having players who can perform well in multiple positions provides Klopp with greater tactical flexibility. And thus the ability to adapt to different match scenarios. It allows the team to have more options and ensures they can maintain their performance level. Even when facing injuries or tactical changes.
