Pundits praise Rico Lewis, the 18 year old Manchester City player who played like Gundogan

Manchester City

Manchester City has beaten RB Leipzig 3-1 in their second Champions League group stage match. City were absolutely dominant in the first-half. Phil foden scored the opening goal and put city ahead. We also witnessed a great play from Bernardo Silva and Rico Lewis. And due to his style of playing, pundits praise Rico Lewis and are comparing him to city’s ex captain Ilkay Gundogan. Gundogan left City in the summer transfer window and has joined FC Barcelona.

Pundits praise Rico Lewis:

One of the biggest positives of the night for City was the performance of young Lewis. Lewis, aged just 18, seemed set to play alongside Rodri in the defensive midfield. However, later on it became clear that the plan was for Lewis to push forward, with Akanji stepping in alongside Rodri.

Lewis was largely excellent in the game. He showed some fantastic touches and also worked very hard. In just the fourth minute, he showed his tenacity when he raced back to win the ball back after initially losing it. His style of playing in the midfield led to comparison to Ilkay Gundogan from Nedum Onuoha and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

On matchday live show, Wright Phillips said:

He almost playing like how Gundogan plays when he makes those late runs into the box. He’s pick up some great positions in the holes as well.

Onuoha added:

“In the Man City podcast he was saying how one of the people he looked up to last season was Gundogan. Gundogan was so good a making some of those runs just off the shoulder.“I think he (Lewis) did have that in his locker. I think he’s learned from someone pretty special.“He’s someone who wants to learn and wants to get better. Sky’s the limit for the kid.”
