Paul Merson delighted by Chelsea’s midfielder selection in the World Cup

Paul Merson is delighted by Conor Gallagher’s selection in the world cup squad for the World Cup. The 22-year-old midfielder was a surprise selection by Gareth Southgate earlier this week.

Gallagher will be traveling with the 26-man English squad to Qatar for the World cup. They surely will be going with the expectation of the World Cup “coming home“.

Paul Merson delighted for Gallagher

Merson believes that many would have written Gallagher off the squad but seeing him make it to the final squad makes him thrilled for the world cup.

In the daily star, Merson wrote:

“I’m so pleased for both James Maddison and Conor Gallagher for making England’s World Cup squad. I did not see the latter’s inclusion coming – nobody gave him a chance after a difficult season with Chelsea,”

“You had begun to wonder whether he’d shot himself in the foot returning to Stamford Bridge after such a positive loan spell with Crystal Palace but it’s now paid dividends.

“It feels like Gallagher has been included as cover for Kalvin Phillips, who has barely played a football match this season.”

Gallagher had a very successful loan spell at Crystal Palace last season, and it surely helped him get the limelight.

However, this season, he still has to adjust to being a starter for Chelsea. Although he surely adapting to his debut season as a first-team player for Chelsea.

The box-to-box midfielder has made 17 appearances across all competitions this season.

His energy and enthusiasm on the pitch is remarkable. Southgate surely believes that he can help in Qatar World Cup.

Chelsea will also be looking forward to Gallagher’s performance this season, hoping this will boost his performance after the break.
