Noni Madueke was ‘outstanding’ in Carabao Cup win says Paul Merson

Chelsea

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson was really impressed by Noni Madueke’s performance in the Chelsea win against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea secured a 2-1 win last night against League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

Noni Madueke’s penalty before the half time levelled the tie. The 21-year-old attacker took the spot-kick. He won it after drawing a foul inside the box with some great piece of dribbling.

Afterwards, In the second half Enzo Fernandez scored the match-winning goal coming off the bench. It was his first goal for the club.

Next month Chelsea will be facing Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Paul Merson, in the post-match show, spoke about Madueke’s standout performance for Chelsea on Wednesday evening in the domestic cup fixture.

The Blues midfielder Conor Gallagher got a special mention, too.

“He (Madueke) played very well and he finishes the penalty… I thought Conor Gallagher and Madueke were outstanding for Chelsea,” Merson told

The game wasn’t televised anywhere for supporters, but the general agreement from those watching is that Madueke stole the show during a dull affair.

Scott Minto praised the “dangerous” Madueke after his midweek contribution against AFC Wimbledon.

Super sub Enzo Fernandez saves the Blues’ Carabao Cup blushes as Noni Madueke was on fire

Noni Madueke carried Chelsea’s attacking threat singlehandedly at times. Won a penalty at the end of one of the many driving runs – picked himself up, dusted himself down and slotted it away.

Faded somewhat as the game progressed, but still went close in the dying embers.

Enzo Fernandez forced an excellent save from long range, moments after coming on. Later, capitalized on a horrible error to score his first-ever Chelsea goal, curling the ball into an empty net from the edge of the box.

Almost added to his tally immediately with another long-range effort, but he’d already made the difference. Conspired to miss another open goal with the last kick of the game.

We’ve seen very little from him in the opening weeks of the 2023/24 season, but we would be tempted to give him a starting role in this Saturday’s Premier League match at home to Nottingham Forest.

If Mauricio Pochettino wants to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, something he did last night for the first time this season, Madueke is a great fit out wide.
