Liverpool was on the verge of signing Orkun Kökçü from Feyenoord

Liverpool

Liverpool came close to securing a deal for Orkun Kökçü from Feyenoord before the player ultimately moved to Benfica. The report suggests that Liverpool made significant progress in their pursuit of Kökçü. But they were unable to finalize the deal, resulting in the player’s transfer to Benfica instead.

According to 1908.nl, Liverpool had been close to convincing Orkun Kökçü to make a move to Anfield earlier in the summer. The report suggests that the Reds made significant progress in their negotiations with the midfielder. But they were ultimately unable to secure his signature.

Orkun Kökçü has been the subject of numerous transfer rumors in recent years due to his standout performances for Feyenoord. The midfielder has been a key player for the Dutch side, particularly during their successful title campaign under manager Arne Slot this season. Kökçü’s impressive performances have attracted attention from various clubs, fueling speculation about a potential move away from Feyenoord.

After managing to retain Orkun Kökçü’s services for several years, Feyenoord finally saw the midfielder depart this summer. Benfica from Portugal successfully lured him away from De Kuip, ending his tenure with Feyenoord. However, had Liverpool had their way, Kökçü could have potentially ended up in the Premier League, as the club was reportedly close to securing a deal for him. Despite Liverpool’s interest, Benfica ultimately emerged as the preferred destination for Kökçü.

Why did Liverpool fail in the pursuit of Orkun Kökçü?

Liverpool advanced in their pursuit of Orkun Kökçü and were “quite close” to securing a deal for the midfielder. It appears that Liverpool asked Kökçü not to sign with Benfica and set a deadline for submitting a bid to Feyenoord. However, despite their efforts, Kökçü ultimately decided to join Benfica instead of moving to Liverpool.

The bid from Liverpool for Orkun Kökçü did not materialize. This could have been disappointing for intermediaries involved in the potential deal, such as Fulco van Kooperen from company Muy Manero. It suggests that efforts were made to facilitate the transfer. But for undisclosed reasons, the bid did not come to fruition.

It appears that after Liverpool’s interest did not result in a concrete offer. Hence, Orkun Kökçü made a quick decision to join Benfica. He may view Benfica as a suitable intermediate step in his career. Thus, offering him the opportunity to further develop and potentially secure a bigger move in the future.
