Liverpool unsure about the futures of Henderson and Fabinho

As Liverpool prepares for their pre-season training camp in Germany, there is notable inclusion of two key figures. That is Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, in the provisional squad. However, amidst ongoing transfer speculations, Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph has reported the possibility of these experienced stalwarts potentially moving to Saudi Arabia.

If there are no significant developments in the transfer market within the next 24 hours, it appears that both Henderson and Fabinho are likely to remain at Liverpool. At least for the time being. The team is eagerly anticipating their first friendly match against Karlsruher, a Bundesliga 2 team, scheduled for Wednesday.

Jordan Henderson, the 33-year-old captain of Liverpool, faces a significant decision. It could have a profound impact on his career trajectory. Al-Ettifaq, a club from Saudi Arabia, has presented a contract worth £700,000 per week. There is speculation regarding Henderson’s intentions. But it is evident that he is carefully weighing all available options before making a decision.

If Al-Ettifaq’s interest in Henderson is aimed at securing him at a reduced price, the situation could become complicated for the player. Liverpool has made it clear that they have no intention of lowering their asking price. They are firm on a minimum valuation of £20 million. This valuation is in line with the fee that Chelsea received for 32-year-old Kalidou Koulibaly. Thus, indicating Liverpool’s stance on the matter.

What will happen of the two Liverpool giants?

Fabinho, the reliable midfield presence, is also attracting attention from Saudi Arabia. Al-Ittihad is reportedly considering making a significant bid of £40 million for his services. The potential arrival of such substantial offers could potentially disrupt Jurgen Klopp’s plans for the upcoming season. As it introduces uncertainty regarding Fabinho’s future at the club.

In 2021, Jurgen Klopp played a pivotal role in securing a four-year contract for Henderson, which amounted to £200,000 per week. This decision deviated from the traditional strategy employed by FSG (Fenway Sports Group), which typically followed a data-driven approach when extending contracts for players aged 30 and above. The deviation from the usual approach raised some eyebrows at the time.

Following that contract extension for Henderson, Liverpool has been cautious in signing new midfielders. Thus, resulting in an increase in the age profile of the squad over time. The club has already witnessed the departure of three senior midfielders since May. While Liverpool has shown a willingness to sell one midfielder to accommodate a new arrival, the club has not planned for the scenario of losing both Henderson and Fabinho, as it deviates from their intended blueprint for the team.
