James Maddison will undergo a medical on Wednesday before completing his £40m move from Leicester to Tottenham. He will be first signing that will get Spurs back on track.
The England international has agreed terms on a long-term contract and his arrival will come as a major boost for Ange Postecoglou. The new Spurs manager wants to reconfigure his side in an attacking 4-3-3 and signing Maddison, who was unable to prevent Leicester from dropping into the Championship last season, will increase his creative options.
James Maddison is the perfect fit for Tottenham
It is a rebuilding job for Postecoglou, who could play Maddison as an advanced No 8 or as part of his front three. Maddison earned a spot in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup and he has three caps. He contributed 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League last season.
And Maddison is currently carrying out his medical with the north London side after agreeing personal terms of £170,000-a-week.
‘Tottenham have now verbal agreement in place with Leicester to sign James Maddison, here we go!’, tweeted journalist Fabrizio Romano. ‘Next steps: medical tests, documents being prepared and then signed.’
James Maddison is undergoing his Tottenham medical on Wednesday afternoon ahead of a £45million move from Leicester.
The initial fee is understood to be in the region of £40million according to reports, with add-ons taking the deal to £45m, as Mail Sport reported on Tuesday night.
Maddison only had one year left on his contract. The Championship side evidently regard £40m as a fair price for their most consistent performer.
However, the playmaker looks set to bolster the resources of new boss Ange Postecoglou. Who took up the position after leaving Celtic. Maddison’s Leicester team-mate Harvey Barnes may yet join him in north London.
