Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry is considering a surprising return to former club Arsenal.
The 26-year-old is yet to sign a new contract and could be sold. The London side is keeping tabs on the German whom they sold years ago.
According to The Sun, the forward is on the radar of multiple clubs including Arsenal. Gnabry has said in the past that he would entertain a move back to Arsenal one day – calling them “the favourite” for his signature of any Premier League side – and should the Gunners qualify for the Champions League this season, it seems a more realistic purchase than first meets the eye.
Gnabry’s contract expires in 2023 and if he doesn’t sign an extension, Bayern could be forced to sell him for less. Although a renewal hasn’t been completely ruled out yet.
HOW DOES GNABRY FIT IN AT ARSENAL?
The German international is adept at playing on either wing and two-footed. He could fit in at one of four positions for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Gnabry could take the place of Bukayo Saka, who could then be forced to change wings. Or he could take Gabriel Martinelli’s spot and the Brazilian would have to pay upfront. Arteta recently talked about trying the youngster there and Gnabry’s move would just make it even sweeter.
The Bayern winger is also comfortable as a False-9 where Martinelli, Saka and Odegaard/Smith-Rowe all make runs. Or as an attacking mid in Arteta’s 4-2-3-1 formation, however, the chances of that are relatively low.
Needless to say, Gnabry will fit in perfectly at Arsenal and will provide them with quality in attack. The Gunners are on the lookout for attacking options after they missed out on Dusan Vlahovic and this signing could be just that. Gnabry’s signing could also be a display of intent. While the German is one of the best wingers in all of Europe and Bayern will try to renew him.
