Former player helps Wolves avoid FFP punishments in transfer window

The Financial Fair Play rules or the FFP has been a concern for Premier League Clubs for a long time. These regulations are made to ensure fair use of funds in the sport we love. But over the time clubs have found numerous ways to bypass the FFP rules. One such recent case is the Premier League side Wolves which avoided a FFP punishment by the sale of Matheus Nunes, according to reports.

Kevin De Bruyne’s injury

The Man City Captain was injured in August against Burnley keeping him out until early 2024.
The blow to Kevin De Bruyne forced Man City to look for more options in the midfield. Man City looked to bolster their squad by bringing in Matheus Nunes on deadline day. However, the £53 million transfer of Nunes proved to be a better deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

How did Wolves avoid FFP breach?

According to John Percy from The Telegraph, Wolves are set to avoid a FFP punishment due to the sale of Matheus Nunes to Manchester City.
Reports suggest that Wolves had to raise £90 million during the transfer window or they would have been in ‘serious trouble’ in 2024. Wolves raised £140 million from player sales and surpassed the £90 million requirement for avoiding the punishment.

Tactical advantage of the transfer

Matheus Nunes has provided an additional option to Pep Guardiola in the midfield. Pep having Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden in the squad, along with the new signing Nunes gives the squad depth and quality. Nunes has 10 appearances for the Treble winning side this season since his transfer, with an assist to his name. In the coming weeks, with fixture congestion depth in midfield might be key in another successful season for Man City. Whereas, Wolves might have a yet another successful transfer window next summer as they avoided FFP punishments.
