Chelsea manager wants Ugochukwu to replace Lavia for now

Mauricio Pochettino has a highly skilled young Chelsea player eagerly awaiting the opportunity to fill the void left by the injured Romeo Lavia. The Belgian midfielder is facing a period of recovery on the sidelines. Also Moises Caicedo’s availability pending assessment before Sunday’s match against Bournemouth. Hence, this could be the perfect moment for Lesley Ugochukwu to make a starting appearance.

Chelsea chose to exercise caution with Lavia. Thus, refraining from immediately placing him in the starting lineup following his high-profile transfer from Southampton. Pochettino had mentioned on Friday that Lavia was nearing full fitness after training during the international break. But an unfortunate twisted ankle may now result in an extended period of absence for him.

Pochettino said:

“It’s a sad situation because he was nearly fit to be involved again with the team. Now we need to wait and hope it is not a big issue for him, and the team of course, because he cannot help the team.”

Pochettino also mentioned that Caicedo’s status as a starter against the Cherries was not assured. Considering the extensive travel involved in his international duty with Ecuador.

Can Ugochukwu live up to the expecations of Chelsea?

Fortunately for Pochettino, he has a recent addition to the squad. Rumors say he left a significant mark during training. Ugochukwu came from Rennes this summer in a deal reportedly valued at just over £23 million. He is now generating positive buzz.

The teenager could have been a candidate for an immediate loan move before the transfer deadline, similar to what Chelsea often does with their young talents. Nevertheless, Pochettino made the decision to retain him within the club’s ranks until at least January, and Ugochukwu has already made three brief appearances.

The Blues may have initially intended to ease the 19-year-old into action. Hence Pochettino might demand high levels of performance from his team this weekend following a disappointing beginning to his managerial stint in West London.
