Chelsea wants to sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for €100m and Marcos Alonso. According to Fabrizio Romano, The Belgium striker has been stated by Inter Milan as untouchable this transfer market. Chelsea wants to buy a striker this season and by their current interests would only settle for a top-notch striker.
Romelu Lukaku last season in the title-winning season, scored 24 and assisted 11 goals. He also had a goal conversion rate of 25% and had 1.3 shots on target per 90. In Inter Milan he played in a two-striker formation beside Lautaro Martinez. Romelu Lukaku has three years left on his current contract and is valued at €90m.
Romelu Lukaku had signed for Chelsea in 2011 for a fee of £13.50m from Anderlecht. From 2012-2014 he was sent on loan to West Brom and Everton. At the end of his loan to Everton, he was sold to them for £31.82m. Romelu Lukaku played for Everton for three seasons scoring 20+ goals in each of them. During the summer Transfer Marker of 2017, Chelsea and Manchester United were in a bidding war for Lukaku. With a bid of £76.23m, Manchester United successfully signed him to the club. While there he scored 28 goals in two seasons. In 2019 he was sold to Inter Milan for £66.60m where each season he averaged scoring 23 goals.
Why Are Chelsea Trying So Hard to Sign a Striker like Romelu Lukaku this season?
Last season Chelsea had two top goal scorers, Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham. Both of them scored 12 goals. While Tammy Abraham did it in 32 games, Timo Werner took 52. Timo Werner also missed 18 big chances to score a goal. Due to this Chelsea have been not scoring enough goals even when their xG was higher. With a prolific Striker like Romelu Lukaku, the club can once again challenge for the title.
If Romelu Lukaku joins Chelsea, he can play as the number 9 in their 3-4-2-1 formation. Besides can be Kai Havertz or Timo Werner, both capable of either going deep or getting in behind. If Chelsea wishes to play the 3-4-1-2 formation, Lukaku could build a similar partnership with Werner as he had with Lautaro Martinez. Due to the playing style of Lukaku, he could fit in any club if needed.
Romelu Lukaku is still just 28 years old. With each club in the Premier league signing young talented defenders. This year it seems to be the club with the most attacking prowess that shall be the ones to challenge for the title. With Manchester United signing Sancho, and Manchester City looking to sign Harry Kane and Jack Grealish. Chelsea will need to strengthen in the offensive department of their starting 11.
