Arsenal player Declan Rice compared to Chelsea legend by Neville

About Football Express UK

Former Premier League defender Gary Neville has drawn a comparison between Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea’s legendary player Michael Essien. Declan Rice made his move to Arsenal from West Ham United in the recent summer transfer window. During a discussion on Sky Sports, Gary Neville noted that when observing the 24-year-old, he sees more similarities between Rice and Michael Essien. Rather than likening him to Patrick Vieira or Roy Keane.

Neville said:

“What I think he brings to Arsenal’s midfield is power, personality and physicality. Essien brought that to Chelsea. I think that would, for me, be a better example of what I see him as.”

“[Claude] Makelele was the defender, [Frank] Lampard was the goals and Essien, and this is not a criticism by the way, Essien was a brilliant player. I loved him at Chelsea.”

“I thought he was outstanding. But he was the power, he was a force in there for three or four years. And for me, I see him more as an Essien. I wouldn’t put him personally in the category of Keane and Vieira.”

Who does Arsenal player Declan Rice represent the most?

Players like Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira are the standard for midfielders in the Premier League. However, observers can draw comparisons between Declan Rice and Michael Essien. It may imply that the England international is evidently exhibiting positive attributes in his style of play.

Declan Rice, the former captain of West Ham, a player who David Moyes regards as possessing “special” talent, has embarked on a promising beginning to his Arsenal journey. He clinched the Community Shield earlier this month. He also played a role in assisting Mikel Arteta’s team in securing full points from their initial two Premier League matches.

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, is likely aiming for Rice to build upon his performances. Thereby motivating his team towards clinching the Premier League title. The considerable investment in Rice underscores the Gunners’ objective to narrow the gap with Manchester City. Thus, ultimately surpass them in their pursuit of success.
