In the final days of the summer transfer window, Arsenal was linked with the signing of a midfielder. Following injuries to Mohammad Elneny and Thomas Partey, they were heavily linked with Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, though a move failed to materialize in time.
Douglas Luiz has since signed a new contract at Villa Park, but the Gunners may still try to bring in midfield reinforcements in January. Ex-Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison believes that the Gunners will spend in January. Regarding the topic he said:
“In the transfer window they wanted another midfielder, they did try to bring in Douglas Luiz. I think if Arsenal are still in this position, and they will come January, they could go again. They could go and spend again and go for it again and strengthen even more.“
“The players that we have mentioned can all come in, they are capable. I think another midfielder, I worry because [Paul] Merson said, Partey has been outstanding and he can’t stay fit at the moment, that is the biggest problem. They haven’t got many players that can do that job in there. They can put [Oleksandr] Zinchenko in there, but [Kieran] Tierney left-back if they want to but they played [Takehiro] Tomiyasu there, he did a brilliant job. So they have got options.“
“Tierney must be frustrated at the moment because he is thinking Zinchenko is not fit, Tomiyasu comes in and I think Tierney is an outstanding defender but that’s what you want, if you want to win trophies you need competition for places, and that’s what they are doing at the moment.”
The Viewpoint of Arsenal
Arsenal currently stand at the top of the league with 27 points, four points clear of Manchester City and Tottenham. Their next match is against Southampton on Sunday. They also stand on the top of their Europa League group, after a 1-0 win against PSV.
Thomas Partey has been a key player in Arsenal’s recent success. However, injury problems have plagued Ghanian International, and his first-choice replacement Mohammad Elneny is out with a long-term injury. Arteta is likely to be looking for a proper replacement for Partey, whose performances regularly raise Arsenal’s overall playing ability. Palmieres’ Danilo has been one of the names which propped up over the Summer.
