Arsenal announce summer signing, however by accident!

Arsenal

After a drab winter transfer window, Arsenal fans are geared up for an exciting summer. Moreover, the Gunners have already started with the transfers to bolster the squad. In an amusing incident however, Arsenal announced a signing for the summer ‘accidentally’. It turns out to be that the Londoners were unaware of a minute detail which opened up the lid. But in the process, they have served their fans with some real optimism for the summer.

Arsenal have signed Matt Turner for the next season from MLS side New England Revolution. The goalkeeper is expected to join the Gunners for the pre-season. However, Arsenal have remained quiet and tight-lipped over the signing. The Gunners have refrained themselves from announcing the deal. Per multiple reports, it is understood that Arsenal will only make it official after the ‘keeper flies in to London and completes his medical. But it seems their protocol hasn’t gone to the plan after they unintentionally announced the deal already.

Arsenal baffle as they unknowingly announce their new signing

Though Matt Turner himself has made the move official, Arsenal chose to remain silent. The Gunners have reportedly paid a fee of around £5-£6 million to the MLS side for Turner’s acquisition. The 27-year-old has played 107 games for New England Revolution so far since joining them in 2016. Moreover, the American ‘keeper has featured 16 times as well for his national side.

While his new employers Arsenal were yet to make the deal official, they may have done it now accidentally. Turner recently wed his long-time girlfriend and posted the pictures of the same on Instagram. However, a special bouquet of red and white flowers did the job of announcing Turner to Arsenal. A card which came in along with the flowers read: ‘Congratulations on your wedding day! Best wishes, From everyone at Arsenal FC.’ That’s more than a hint to tell that Arsenal have announced their signing.

Leno to leave in the summer

Matt Turner will be joining the Londoners as their second choice behind Aaron Ramsdale. Bernd Leno, current deputy of Ramsdale is heavily tipped to leave after the season ends. It seems Arsenal have wasted no time in securing a back-up. Leno who was number 1 for Arsenal since joining them 2018 may have played his last game for the Gunners already. Furthermore, with Arsenal signing Turner, its probably the end of the road for Leno.

Leno has offers for him from his homeland Germany as well as the Premier League. Many of the Bundesliga clubs are interested in bringing him back to the German top tier. The 30-year-old will enter the final year of his contract after this season ends. Though Arsenal won’t be getting much for their second-choice ‘keeper, the club still expects to squeeze out £10-£15 million from the German’s departure. However, that will still be a loss on the £19 million Arsenal paid for Leno’s signature.
