Manchester City star striker Erling Haaland went on with another clean sheet in the Champions League during their 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig. The defending champions were forced to find two late goals in Germany to continue the winning start to Group G. Also, Haaland’s struggle in UCL games is quite visible from the recent statistics.
Haaland’s struggle in UCL:
City coach Pep Guardiola may be a little worried about Haaland. The Norwegian superstar has now failed to score in his last five Champions League matches, making it the longest draught of his career till date.
Haaland’s contribution till date in Europe:
Haaland’s overall record in Europe is quite impressive. He had 35 goals in 32 matches, making this goalless patch a drought by his standards. He is already joint-17th on the all-time list of Champions League goalscorers. Moreover, he’s above some vintage players like Samuel Eto’o and Wayne Rooney. His 52 goals in the 2022/23 season at City helped them obtain a historic treble. But Haaland does not contribute much to Guardiola’s side when he is not scoring.
He has touched the ball only a meager 25 times during city’s match vs Leipzig.
However, Haaland still remains the leading goalscorer in the Premier league this season. He has eight goals in seven games, but the forward has missed an unusual number of big chances. When asked about Haaland’s form in front of goal this season, Guardiola insisted there is no problem.
Speaking before the Leipzig match, Pep said,
“He had a lot of chances to score the goals. It gets more difficult with five defenders, on the 18 yard box, there but not just for him for any player around the world.“
“If you see the chances he’s had and the goals he’s scored, he’s at the same level as last season“, he further added.
