Sherwood says Arsenal midfielder just passes it ‘backwards & sideways’

Arsenal

Tim Sherwood has slammed Jorginho for the performances he is putting up in Arsenal colours by claiming that he ‘slows the game down’ for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The 31-year-old joined Arsenal from Chelsea in January in a surprise transfer after the north London club failed to get their first-choice target, Moises Caicedo.

But Jorginho hasn’t exactly hit the heights he would have liked, there have been some high moments,

His winning goal against Aston Villa last season,

But also many low moments, such as the weekend defeat to Newcastle United.

Tim Sherwood feels Jorginho’s performances aren’t to the standard of what Mikel Arteta wants from his players

Because he ‘doesn’t see that forward pass often enough’, as he told Premier League Productions (06/11/23 at 5:05 pm).

On Saturday, the Italy international donned the captain’s armband in the absence of Martin Odegaard, with Arsenal suffering a costly 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

Whilst Anthony Gordon’s goal and how it all came about was a major talking point,

For Sherwood, he just doesn’t understand what Jorgingo is bringing to the table.

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho passes it ‘sideways and backwards’

“Jorginho, for me, he slows the game down too much,” said Sherwood. “He wants to play backwards and sidewards too much. He doesn’t see that forward pass often enough.”

Arsenal’s midfield seems to be lacking this season,

Even though the team just suffered its first defeat of the campaign over the weekend and that in a controversial fashion.

But that bite and control is missing. Declan Rice has been outstanding. Thomas Partey has either been used at right-back by Arteta or injured.

Martin Odegaard has been his old self,

But that left-sided number eight position isn’t seeing the consistent performances like it previously has.

Ian Wright spoke about how Arsenal are ‘missing’

Granit Xhaka and that is now proving to be the case months after his exit in the summer.
