The English Premier League is considering swapping stadiums to ensure the matches do not get postponed further due to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
After the sad passing of her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the top flight in England has come to a standstill. The passing followed a series of drastic decisions that needed to be made by the management of the league.
Premier League decided to postpone last weekend’s fixtures to an unknown date as a mark of respect. Now, the league could further be on the cusp of pushing the games that are scheduled for this weekend.
Premier League to swap stadiums?
The Queen’s funeral is scheduled to take place on September 19, Monday which puts a big question mark on the matches. According to The Athletic, the Premier League clubs are hopeful for the matches to go through as scheduled this weekend.
However, heavy security will need to be administered for the funeral due to huge amount of people expected to turn up. As the matches are scheduled, Chelsea crosses swords with Liverpool, and Brentford plays Arsenal in a London derby.
Moreover, Tottenham Hotspur are to host Leicester City this weekend as things stand. However, due to the funeral, the above fixtures are under threat of being pushed to another date.
The Metropolitan Police refused to comment on if there would be any postponement of games in London. They said-
“Whether matches go ahead is a matter for the footballing authorities.
If fixtures do take place the Met will work with the relevant partners and ensure that appropriate policing plans are in place.”
If the matches are pushed, there would be some clubs without any football for over three weeks. While there is also the international break on the horizon, fans would hope for the fixture to go through.
