Paul Merson believes Chelsea made a mistake rejecting Cristiano Ronaldo

About Football Express UK

Chelsea have rejected the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. Paul Merson believes Chelsea have made a mistake allowing the player to go away.

Chelsea were earlier in the run for Ronaldo as he looks to move away from the club. This comes after the shocking season Manchester United have had in the Premier League last season. United end the season on 6th with 58 points, Their worst finish since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Moreover United had a goal difference of zero as they scored and conceded the same amount of goals. Although United had a terrible season, Ronaldo was the standout player as he scored 18 goals in the Premier League finishing 3rd in the race for the Premier League golden boot, Only Mohamed Salah and Son scored more.

Although Ronaldo has produced some outstanding numbers his age is of the concern as he is 38 as of now. Chelsea do not want to invest in a 38 year old anytime soon, Hence they dropped their interest.

Paul Merson believes Chelsea dropping their interest was a mistake.

“Chelsea won’t finish higher than third next season unless they sign a world class striker. And it is why they should change their mind on Cristiano Ronaldo because he is one player ideally suited to fill the role still on the market. You keep hearing that Ronaldo was offered to Chelsea weeks ago and that they have now decided against signing him. But that’s a mistake.”

Chelsea need a new striker before the new season as they have lost Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan. Although they have the services of Timo Werner, the German is very unreliable in front of goal. Moreover Tuchel does not like using him as a striker.
