Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has predicted that Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will leave the club in the January transfer window.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to leave the club in January amid a competition for places in the squad.
The England international has been first choice for most of his tenure at the Emirates Stadium,
Having joined from Sheffield United for roughly £30million.
The 25-year-old quickly ousted Bernd Leno from his position after joining,
Allowing Mikel Arteta to implement his style of play, where playing out from the back was crucial.
The goalkeeper has become a key part of that development,
It has been seen with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United over the years.
will Ramsdale leave Arsenal
While Ramsdale got plenty of praise, even earning a place as a nominee for the Yashin Trophy for the most recent campaign, there have been questions over his place. Matt Turner’s exit paved the way for another goalkeeper to join and create more competition in the squad.
The player opted for was David Raya,
Who joined from Brentford on an initial season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the campaign.
It has created plenty of questions over which goalkeeper will start,
With Ramsdale initially holding the position in the first four games.
That changed after the most recent international break though,
Where he was dropped in favour of Raya, who kept clean sheets against Everton and PSV Eindhoven.
Another start against Tottenham in the North London Derby saw the shot stopper make one fantastic save as well as a slight mistake.
Ramsdale appeared supportive of his counterpart from the bench,
With videos showing him clapping on a save he made in the first half.
With the goalkeeper now without a start in three games,
it has led to discussions over a potential exit for guaranteed first-team minutes,
Just months after extending his contract with the club.
“You never have two goalkeepers of the same level at the club, especially two top goalkeepers,
Because it’s usually that they’re both not good enough and you don’t know which one to get rid of.
I really admire Arteta for doing it because it’s so ruthless and I don’t see Ramsdale getting back into the squad. I think Raya is clearly the number one choice now and Aaron Ramsdale will have to move on.
If they get a good fee and he gets a move to a good club in January,
I think it’s very likely to happen.”
