Ian Wright admits that he is still sad that Arsenal sold Emi Martinez. Ian Wright has told Martinez that he was utterly disappointed when Arsenal decided to sell the goalkeeper. He went on to say that Aston Villa got the Argentinian for very, very cheap.

What Ian Wright went on to say about Emi Martinez

Martinez’s departure came as Mikel Arteta made the decision to stick with Leno as his number one. Martinez had done an outstanding job in the final weeks of the previous campaign after Leno had suffered an injury. This was the perfect time for Arsenal to cash in on a goalkeeper. But they made the decision on the wrong goalkeeper. Martinez is what Arsenal needed. He was the modern type of goalkeeper who is good playing out from the back.

Ian Wright went on to say:-

“I can’t lie, I was disappointed to see you leave because in that moment, you were amazing,”

It must be tough though Emi when the manager says he’s my number one. I remember I sent you a message when you were leaving Arsenal, and I thought Villa got you for very, very cheap.”

But Villa have benefitted from Arsenal’s decision. And the Gunners have managed to move on with a smart move of their own. But Martinez was still a key player. He would have added that World Cup winning confidence to the team. He was an excellent shot stopper as well. Martinez played an essential part in Arsenal winning the Fa Cup in 2020.

Obviously, Arsenal would have loved to have kept Martinez as well. But at that stage, he had set his sights on representing Argentina. And with that, he got the green light to join Aston Villa in a deal worth £17 million. Martinez will surely have no regrets about his decision.
