Chelsea’s penalty woes after Jorginho’s departure

Arsenal's Jorginho Italy Bailey

The departure of Jorginho has just added to Chelsea‘s miseries this season. Sitting in 10th position in the table, they’ve only been able to register one win in their last 5 matches. The Italian International has an excellent record from 12 yards out. He was their designated spot-kick taker during his stay at Stamford Bridge. Missing only on 4 occasions and finding the back of the net 26 times, which shows why the club had so much confidence in his penalty-taking abilities. More recently keepers are getting used to his unorthodox run-up, but in most situations, he has had the last laugh.

Chelsea in a Fix

The Blues need to take a decision regarding this. The earlier they do the better for them. Chelsea manager Graham Potter is in a fix regarding who should be their next designated penalty taker. Joao Felix moved to Chelsea in January. He has an excellent record from the spot for his previous club and country. Till now he has failed to convert only once. Club record signing Enzo Fernandez is also said to be a good penalty taker but in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, he wasn’t called up to take a shot in both the penalty shootouts Argentina played.

Havertz should step up

Of all the contenders, Havertz seems to be the best option they’ve right now. The 23-year-old has only scored one penalty for the blues, and that too in a shootout. The presence of Jorginho on the pitch prevented Havertz to take penalties. He boasts an immaculate record for spot kicks and has scored 18 till now. He can deal with the pressure which was evident when he converted his spot kick during the FIFA Club World Cup final. Apart from Havertz, Raheem Sterling is also an option but he isn’t that consistent and enjoys a success rate of just more than 50 percent. The best Chelsea can do now is to hand this responsibility to Havertz, he has shown he can score under pressure. The sooner the better for the club and will give some relief to Graham Potter, who’s facing an uphill battle. It will be tough to be as consistent as Jorginho but it’s the best they have got and they have to take the chance.
