With Southampton’s relegation, Chelsea now have the opportunity to bring Tino Livramento back to Stamford Bridge. Back in August 2021, the Blues sold the 20-year-old Tino Livramento to Southampton for a fee of £5 million. However, as part of the negotiations between the two clubs, Chelsea managed to secure a buyback clause for Livramento.
According to information provided by The Athletic, a deal to bring Tino Livramento back to Chelsea could be at a price of approximately £35 million. Thanks to the inclusion of Chelsea’s sell-on clause in the previous transfer agreement.
However, some might argue that it would be unwise for Chelsea to activate Tino Livramento’s buyback clause. Mauricio Pochettino already have Reece James as a reliable right-back option and Malo Gusto for that position. Hence, the necessity for Livramento’s return may be a question.
What does Chelsea plan to do with Livramento?
Indeed, Chelsea invested £26.3 million to acquire a 20-year-old right-back from Lyon in January. Hence, it would appear peculiar to pursue Tino Livramento as well. Thus, potentially leading to a surplus of talented right-backs vying for a single position.
However, if Mauricio Pochettino opts to deploy Reece James in a midfield role, then the idea of pursuing Livramento could become more reasonable and strategically sound.
A substantial sum of £35 million for a position that doesn’t urgently require reinforcements might be better allocated towards acquiring a striker or a new central midfielder.
Nonetheless, it is worth monitoring Livramento’s situation. Since, Chelsea stands to gain a significant financial benefit through the sell-on clause. Even if he ends up on another club.
