Why Manchester United’s midfield target Vitinha may not be a necessity

About Football Express UK

Porto midfielder Vitinha has been on Manchester United’s radar with the player linked to the club this summer.

Having joined Porto in 2013, the midfielder progressed up the ranks from the academy before cementing his place in the first-team setup. Having a fair bit of Premier League experience with Wolves, Vitinha is linked with United and Arsenal joining the race.

The 22-year-old impressed scouts with his performances with the Portuguese club and playing an important role in winning the league title this season. Immediately alerting clubs across Europe to take notice of him, United appears to be leading the race for the midfielder.

However, the underlying question is whether the Red Devils really require his services ahead of the next season.

A Necessity in the Manchester United Midfield?

It is a known fact that the manager Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster the midfield and add depth to the squad. Due to the squad overhaul, United are forced to make changes this summer and bring in players.

The gaffer already has Frenkie de Jong as his prime target in the transfer window and wants to secure his signature. Moreover, Donny van de Beek is set to return to the Old Trafford with his fair share of experience in the midfield. Given that the manager shares a bond with Van de Beek and de Jong since the Ajax days, it may seem tricky for Vitinha to break through.

Fred, Bruno Fernandes, and Scott Mctominay are also part of the midfield and could very well be starters next season. However, Fernandes plays higher up the pitch as he enjoys attacking with the likes of Ronaldo and Elanga.

That leaves Fred, Mctominay, Van de Beek and de Jong in the midfield for the boss to turn to. His past records at the English top-flight may be numbers to hide.

He managed to assist just once and had a difficult time adding his name to the score sheet during his stint with Wolves. However, the player was young and has now developed to be the one for the future.

Moreover, ten Hag has groomed several youngsters in the past during his time at Ajax. Working under the Dutchman could be of use to the player.

At 22, the player has a bright career ahead of him. That said, it still remains to be seen if he makes the cut to the United squad next season.
