Manchester United will have to make a quick decision about their midfielder Jesse Lingard. The 28-year-old will have his contract end in the summer of 2022 and the club could lose him on a free transfer.
The new reports coming have suggested that the talks for a contract extension have stalled between Lingard and Manchester United. As it stands, the attacking midfielder will be leaving the Red Devils at the end of the season.
Manchester United are now in a tough situation as they would not want to see Lingard leave for free. There are even talks about selling him in January or even letting him go on loan.
QUALITY MIDFIELDER
Lingard clearly is a quality player something he proved last season when he went on loan to West Ham United. During his half a season stay with the Hammers, Lingard was excellent for them.
Under David Moyes, Lingard appeared 16 times for West Ham United. He became the key figure in their attack as he scored 9 goals and assisted 5 times for his teammates. His performance even earned his recall to the England national team. (all stats from Transfermarkt)
It was believed that Lingard will make the move permanent in the summer. But Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to keep him in the side. However, it has been another disappointing season for Lingard, having only made 8 appearances for the Red Devils across all competition, with most of them being a substitute.
LINGARD TIME AT MANCHESTER UNITED COMING TO AN END
Manchester United has a big decision to make in January. With contract talks not progressing, the club would not want to let him go for free. Hence selling him in the winter transfer window looks to be the best option.
This is not a singular event as midfielder Paul Pogba also has his contract end in 2022. So it is important to prioritize which player to hold on to and who to let go of.
West Ham United looks to be the most likely destination after the success Lingard had over there. But Manchester United could even try and sell him to Newcastle United in January, who under their new super-rich owner will surely be looking to strengthen their squad. One thing that looks to be clear is that Lingard will not be a Red Devil come the next season.
