Weghorst’s Debut: Manchester United’s Nine-Game Winning Streak Comes To An End

Erik ten Hag

Manchester united‘s winning streak ends at Wout Weghorst‘s debut. The red devils were in a spectacular 9-game winning form and Crystal Palace put an end to it. Manchester United suffered a late setback when Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise saved a point with a stunning last-gasp free-kick in a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park. Bruno Fernandes‘ first-half goal appeared to be enough for Erik ten Hag‘s United to make it ten wins in a row, but Olise’s incredible long-range effort in the 91st minute saw the game finish level. The Red Devils struggled to really get going in what was a lackluster performance at Selhurst Park after the highs of Saturday’s derby-day victory over Manchester City. They are grateful to David De Gea for his heroics in helping to deny Patrick Viera’s team.

If Ten Hag’s men are to achieve that latter goal, they will undoubtedly require more from their attacking figureheads, with recent addition Wout Weghorst having had an “indifferent” debut, according to journalist Steven Railston.

Wout Weghorst’s Debut Gives Manchester United Something To Build On

Weghorst had appeared to be a bit of a surprise signing for those at the Theatre of Dreams after joining on loan from Burnley. But he had failed to silence any doubters after making a limited impact against the Eagles. Erik ten Hag’s choice to start Wout Weghorst right away after signing him sparked questions before the late drama.

Even though it appeared to be a three-pronged attack, Weghorst mostly worked behind Marcus Rashford and Antony. The front two, by dropping deep to confuse defenders and create space for the other two to take advantage of. The Dutchman made a confident debut, demonstrating why Ten Hag brought him in.

He kept the ball up nicely, and his pushing made it challenging for the Palace. He attempted to hustle and pressure. Due to it, Palace defenders has be quick to get the ball back by repeatedly shooting at their ankles. Since he stands taller than most other players in the league, he only had one chance. That was a header that he raised onto the top of the net. But he also proved to be a handful from attacking set pieces.

However, it was noticeable how far behind the play he was at times on the transition. In that 69-minute performance, the former Wolfsburg brute completed only 14 of his 20 passes and lost possession eight times. His lone attempt on goal was a tame header that looped over the crossbar. Concerns will have been raised about his inability to truly dominate in the attack. He have only won two of his eight total duels against the young centre-back pairing of Marc Guehi and Chris Richards.

Since these facts are there, United have to build something on his debut.
