“Very direct, quick, tall, strong”: Virgil Van Dijk on Darwin Nunez

Liverpool star centre-half Virgil van Dijk was very high on praise for Manchester United, Arsenal, and Newcastle United summer striker target Darwin Nunez.

Darwin Nunez has well and truly established himself on the European stage this term. The Uruguayan striker has recorded an impressive 34 goals and four assists from 41 appearances across all competition this term. Six of these goals have come in the Champions League. (stats via Transfermarkt) Nunez scored home and away against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals. The 22-year-old also scored against Spanish giants Barcelona in the Champions League.

The Benfica striker has a €150 million release clause in his contract. But the Portuguese side are willing to let Darwin Nunez go for a transfer fee close to €80 million. Arsenal are on the lookout for a new star striker in the summer. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was let go on a free transfer to Barcelona in the January transfer window. While Alexandre Lacazette is out of contract in the summer and he looks set to leave the club on a free.

While Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has made his plans known that the club are looking to sign one or two new strikers. Newcastle United backed by their new owners are looking to sign young players to transform their side into a European giant.

Talking to Rio Ferdinand on FIVE, Virgil van Dijk was asked about the most difficult forward he has ever faced. Firstly, The Dutch defender named a couple of players including Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi. Before mentioning Darwin Nunez. he said:

“Darwin… very direct, quick, tall, strong, it’s quite difficult to play against those guys.”

Reports earlier this week suggested that Darwin Nunez was reserved about moving to the side without Champions League in the summer. But Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the forward will leave the Portuguese outfit in the summer. The reliable journalist talking on his Here We Go podcast said:

“He had an incredible season. He made a decision. Darwin Nunez is going to leave Benfica this summer, 100 percent.”

“I see many rumours about him but I am told he is really tempted by the Premier League, he would love a Premier League move. “Finally, this summer, let’s see what happens, many clubs interested.”
