Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil Van Dijk has revealed that he will be thinking carefully about his club and country future.
The defender exited the Euro 2024 after losing against England in the semi-finals. Netherlands had a very up and down run in this year’s Euro competition. They finished 3rd in the league, below countries like Austria and France. However, they played really well in the knockout stages where they defeated Romania 3-0 and Turkiye 2-1. Against England, it was a very neck to neck battle. But in the end, Ollie Watkins scored the winner in the 90th minute of the game which didn’t give Holland much time to make a comeback.
After their exit, their captain Virgil Van Dijk was not much happy with the referee of the match. Adding with that, he stated that he will be thinking very carefully about his future at Liverpool and Netherlands national team.

State of Van Dijk right now
The Liverpool defender has been going through a lot of things right now. Before the Euro, he had to say goodbye to one of the greatest managers of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool has now appointed Dutch manager Arne Slot from Feyenoord. A change in managers, staff and board could also influence Van Dijk’s decision of staying or leaving the Merseyside. He still has a year left in his contract and the upcoming summer transfer window will be very pivotal for the defender’s decision making.
Arne Slot does not want to lose Van Dijk from his squad. The 32 year old brings in strength, unity and defensive solidarity to the team. Most of all, he is the perfect leader for Liverpool right now as they enter a whole new era.
Van Dijk himself has not given much thought on his future till now. He needs time to process and digest the Euro loss.
“I haven’t the slightest idea right now (about my future). I will think carefully this summer about what I want at the club level and as an international player. Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this. After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”, said the Liverpool captain.
Future of Virgil Van Dijk
Van Dijk has been one of the most important players for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. He has been the main man in the defence line. Along with that, he has been an incredible leader for the Reds and helped his teammates improve every day. With Liverpool, he has won every trophy possible and was 2nd in the 2019 Ballon D’or ceremony. In that year, he lost to Lionel Messi but was above Cristiano Ronaldo.

Nobody knows what is going to happen next. Liverpool fans don’t want to lose Van Dijk after they bid farewell to Klopp last season.
