Turkey face Italy in the opening match of Euro 2020 on 11th June at Stadio Olimpico, Italy. Both the teams were the star performers in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualification campaign and would be eager for getting the three points and sit at the top of Group A.
The Crescent Stars have been able to put up some exceptional performances such as the 4-2 comeback win against the Netherlands. They have a good mix of experience and talent and skipper Burak Yilmaz would be keen on creating an impact for his nation.
However, they face a tough Azzuri, who are unbeaten for 27 matches in a row and had lost just one (1-0 defeat to Portugal in the Nations League). Surprisingly, they made it through to the tournament in style, by winning all the ten matches in their group stage qualifiers.
Turkey vs Italy : Preview
Turkish national team have appointed one of their most successful manager ever, Senol Gunes, who previously helped them finish at 3rd place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, in the current season too, the Turks are one of the most stylish teams in the European Championship.
Skipper Yilmaz has been in outstanding form after winning the Ligue 1 title with Lille and is now looking forward to put up similar performances in the Euros. They are one of the Giant Killers in this competition as they have earlier defeated World Champs France in the World Cup qualifiers this year.
Italy, one of the worst hit countries hit by Coronavirus pandemic, is excited about hosting the first ever match along with supporters at the stadium. Additionally, the hosts come as strong favourites for the title after their scintillating form in the World Cup and Euro qualifiers so far.
As per the COVID restrictions, upto 25% of the stadium capacity could be occupied by fans and thus, an estimate of around 15000 is expected. This encounter is a very rare one and out of 11 total matches played between the two teams, Italy have won 8 and the rest three were draws. However, the Turks would be keen on getting their first win against the Blues.
