Manchester United have entered the final stages of Frenkie De Jong‘s transfer from Barcelona. De Jong has been the priority signing for Erik Ten Hag since he took over. De Jong was not keen on a move as he prefers to stay at Barcelona. However, Barcelona are in financial debt and wants to remove players that return less profit. De Jong is one of the players on that list.
5 Trophyless years
Manchester United have had an abysmal 2021/22 season. They end the season on 6th position with 58 points. United have had their worst season since Alex Ferguson left the club back in 2021/13. Since his departure, United have had a string of managers, None of them coming close to cracking the formula at Old Trafford, Although Jose Mourinho came very close. Moreover United have not won any silverware in the last 5 years. The trend continued this season as well as they failed to win a trophy. However, the talking point was the fact that United conceded the same amount of goals as they scored.
Most of United’s trouble came from their midfield as they were unable to create a lot of chances in the final third. Ten Hag believes United needs a midfielder of De Jong’s caliber.
“His quality is that he ensures that the ball gets into the final third, He is an adventurer, always on the move. Often with the ball, sometimes without the ball. Can you put him at six as the only link? He leaves the middle of the pitch too often for that. And if you don’t give him the freedom to go forward, you won’t get the best out of his game.”
De Jong is now “OK” with a move to United and the Red Devils have sped up the process.
