Transfers: Arsenal, and Liverpool interested in Marco Asensio

Arsenal and Liverpool have shown interest in Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio. Asensio was a very important part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad that won the Champions League this time around. Asensio found the back of the net 12 times and assisted 2 times in 42 appearances in all competitions. The 26-year-old has a contract that lasts till June of 2023. However, Asensio will be leaving as Real have told him they have no intention in extending his contract.

Asensio has had a colorful career at Madrid winning three Champions League titles and La Liga titles since coming into the squad in 2014 from Mallorca. Moreover, Asensio has scored 49 times and assisted 24 times in 235 appearances in a Real Madrid shirt.

Asensio’s fall from grace

Asensio was once Real Madrid’s future as he was hailed to be Madrid’s main man in the future. Asensio proved them right as he continued to perform for Real Madrid. However, the turning point came in 2019 when Real Madrid played Arsenal in a preseason fixture. Asensio was injured for the most part of the season and since then has had consistency problems.

Ever since the injury, Asensio has become injury-prone. Moreover, Asensio is on high wages and Real Madrid wants to offload the wage to restructure their wage bills. Asensio is viewed as a surplus to Real’s squad and wants to sell him. Asensio is well on his way away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
